Stewart Tinsley Walker

GREENSBORO -C

Cryptside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 16, at Westminster Gardens Mausoleum.

Born in 1914 in Richmond , Va. , he was the son of Alleene Bryant and Marshall Dewitt Walker. Employed by Virginia Mutual Insurance Company of Richmond , Va. , he moved his family to Greensboro in 1956. A World War II veteran, Stewart served as a weapons instructor and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Infantry.

Stewart was an avid and accomplished golfer, having made three holes-in-one, and he and Ann were long-time members of Starmount Forest Country Club. He was also a relentless fisherman, renowned punster, crossword puzzle addict and lover of big band music. He will be remembered fondly by those who read the messages embroidered on his many hats and his jaunty whistling wherever he went.

Stewart was married for 67 years to Ann Seelinger Walker who died on Christmas Day, 2006. He was also predeceased by parents and his two beloved brothers, Julian L. and Thomas B. Walker of Richmond .

Stewart is survived by his three daughters, fondly known as his "Killer B's" and their spouses, Ann (Bede) Walker Roberts (Bob) of Shelby , Mary Stewart (Bootsie) Walker Pettigrew (Don) of Charlotte , and Beth Walker (Peter Wohlwend) of Oak Ridge . He also leaves behind four Roberts grandchildren, Rob, Erin, Andy (Lori) and Matt; and two Pettigrew grandchildren, Stephen (Sarah Glenn) and Jonathan; four great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Betty Walker of Richmond , Va. ; plus a great number of beloved nieces, nephews, and their families.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 on Thursday evening at Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel.

In our sadness, the family extends a special thanks to Sherry Allison and Brenda Sexton for their companionship and care over the years, to the Moses Cone Family Practice group and Cone Palliative Care staff, and to Brighton Gardens of Greensboro , where his stay was all too short.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of Moses Cone Hospital, 1200 N. Elm St. , Greensboro , N.C. 27401 .
